Gel overlays
These mattress overlays work on the principle that the user's weight is distributed over liquid or solid gel. Because the gel is able to conform to the user's body shape, the pressure is evenly distributed over the whole area. Gel conducts heat away from the user, making the mattress cool to lie on.

Help and advice
Liquid gel pads will leak when punctured.
It should be borne in mind that these overlays are likely to be heavy and it may not be appropriate to move them unaided.
Care needs to be taken in relation to transfers since gel alone is unlikely to form a stable base.
