Listed here are a range pressure reducing overlays designed to be used on top of an existing mattress.
The materials used include foam, memory foam, gel, water and air.
Using a pressure relief overlay may be less expensive than a pressure relieving bed, and they may be used with an existing bed frame.
Consultation with a community nurse before purchasing any pressure reducing equipment is strongly advised.
Some of these products require ongoing maintenance and adjustment. Care needs to be taken that the pressure relieving features are not compromised by the use of bedding or incontinence devices. Ideally, anything used should be two-way stretch and vapour permeable. Care should also be taken to avoid creases in the sheets.
Be aware that if the overlay is too soft or thin, it may become compressed, allowing the skin to come into contact with the surface beneath, thus removing any pressure reducing qualities. This is called bottoming out.
