Image of Interconnected chair raising blocks Interconnected chair raisers consist of blocks which are connected by a frame and positioned under a chair. They can be used to raise chairs and some sofas - usually within the range of 50 to 135mm. They may be less likely than individual chair raising blocks to become detached from a chair when it is moved, e.g. when vacuuming under the chair.

Help and advice

The ideal height of a chair depends on the individual using it. If your hips are lower than your knees when you are sat down then your chair may be too low, and you may find it easier to stand if the chair was a little higher. However, some chair raisers will not fit certain chairs.

Some individuals, such as those who have just had a hip replacement, need to take care what height the chairs they sit on are as this could affect their hip. Consequently, we recommend you arrange an individual assessment. You can contact your local social services and ask about an occupational therapy assessment. Chair raisers increase the height of the chair's legs or base (if the chair has no legs) making it easier for you to stand up and sit down. The overall increased height will depend on the type of legs of the chair and the product used. Many chair raisers are adjustable within a range. These are often supplied by social service departments or the NHS following a hospital discharge.

Chair raisers can be used on dining chairs to sofas depending on the type and shape of chair leg and chair raiser used. With a larger sofa additional interconnected parts of a raiser may be needed, e.g. if it has six or eight castors.

Chair raisers have a maximum weight limit and are available in different materials some of which are more discrete than others.

Interconnected chair raisers tend to be more stable but the linking parts can get in the way of vacuums. Chairs that are placed on blocks can be quite difficult to move - you will probably require assistance with fitting chair raisers or if moving the chair for cleaning. After moving a chair you should always check that the chair is still correctly positioned on the chair raisers before sitting down.

The British Healthcare Trades Association (BHTA) is the UK's oldest and largest healthcare association (founded in 1917). Its membership consists of some 350 companies from across non-pharmaceutical sectors of the healthcare industry. Members of the BHTA sign up to a code of practice designed to ensure the public can trust that members will give a good service. The BHTA have applied to the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) to have this code of practice agreed as an OFT approved code.

The Telecare Services Association (TSA) is the representative body for the telecare industry in the United Kingdom. The TSA aims to promote and support the telecare industry and highlight the benefits of telecare for service users, their friends, family and carers.
The TSA has developed a Code of Practice for its members which indicate that the service provider has undergone robust independent inspection, against a range of criteria accepted as the industry standard. The code of practice is governed by an audit scheme which meets the requirements of the United Kingdom accreditation service (UKAS).

The Lift and Escalator Industry Association (LEIA) is the trade association and advisory body for the lift and escalator industry. Its members have signed up to a code of practice which includes measures intended to ease consumer concerns and remove undesirable trade practices.

This indicates that the supplier has signed up to the International Organisation of Standards (ISO) 9000 series of standards.

The ISO 9000 series of standards define a Quality System which certifies that formalised business processes are being applied. The standards provide a number of requirements which an organisation needs to fulfill if it is to achieve customer satisfaction through consistent products and services which meet customer expectations.
