This chairs section contains various chairs and seating for children and young people with disabilities. This includes activity chairs, tilt-in-space chairs, floor sitters, harnesses and straddle seats.
Children may need several different types of seating throughout the day. For example, supportive seating may be needed at school, whilst at home both seating for relaxation and functional seating for homework and meal times may be required.
It is very important that the occupational therapist and/or the physiotherapist working with your child are involved in the choice of chair. They can advise on positioning to encourage head control and sitting balance, and on chairs that encourage a symmetrical sitting posture.
All of the activities a child wishes to carry out whilst in the chair should be considered before purchase and the chair should be trialled in the place where it is going to be used.
Some of the equipment listed here may be provided by your local authority, depending on their eligibility criteria. If your child is eligible, the equipment will be provided on a long-term loan basis. Alternatively, you may be eligible for a direct payment to purchase something suitable.
