These changing mats can be used for toileting (changing nappies or incontinence pads) and dressing before and after bathing.
A limited range of changing mats for older children are available, but it may also be possible to use an exercise mat for this purpose.
Changing mats should be long enough for children to lie on, padded and easily wiped clean.
A child who may roll off the mat will need a raised border cushion around the edge of the changing mat.
If the mat is used on the floor, parents and caregivers will need to consider their backs when lifting the child on and off the mat and when attending to him/her. A changing table may be a more appropriate solution.
When considering personal care equipment, an individual assessment with an occupational therapist may be appropriate. Your child's safety is very important and there may be individual factors which determine what equipment best suits your child's needs.
The information on this site is not a substitute for individual assessment.
