Compression stocking aids

Image of Compression stocking aids

Compression stockings are usually prescribed by a doctor or health care professional. They are designed to help manage conditions such as leg ulcers and oedema (swelling) by applying pressure to the leg to increase circulation. They can, however, be difficult to put on as they require a lot of hand and arm strength to stretch over your foot and leg.3

The equipment listed in this section may assist you if you have difficulty bending forward to put on compression or support stockings, or stretching them to put over your legs.1-3

Also included in this section is equipment designed to assist with removing compression stockings.

Help and advice

There are two main types of compression stocking aids: fabric and rigid. A fabric compression stocking aid is usually made from a slippery fabric, and is designed to make it easier slide open-toe style stockings over your foot and leg. You still need to be able to bend and reach your foot with this type of aid. Rigid compression stocking aids are made from a plastic semi-circular tube with two tapes or ribbons attached, or they may consist of a floor standing plastic coated frame, with handles. These assist you to put stockings on if you are unable to bend and reach the floor.1,2
