Equipment to assist with putting on tights

Image of Equipment to assist with putting on tights

The products in this section may assist you if you have difficulty bending forward to put tights on. They are usually a double version of a stocking aid or sock aid.

There are flexible or floor standing styles available. A flexible tights aid is cone shaped and is made of plastic or fabric, usually with two holes at the top where tapes or ropes are attached. The floor standing version usually consists of an plastic coated frame, with handles.1,2

Help and advice

How to use a tights aid:

  • Hold the semi-circular part (gutter) of the tights aid between your knees and ease the legs of the tights over each gutter separately. If you are using a floor standing aid, this may be placed on a flat surface for you to ease the tights over it.
  • Place the tights aid onto the floor using the handle/s or by holding the tapes or ribbons.
  • Slide your feet into the tights. If using a flexible or gutter style aid, you may like to press your feet against a firm object while you pull the gutters up over your heels and the back of your legs.
  • Pull the gutters up until you are able to reach the tights with your hands.
  • Remove the gutters or frame and pull the tights up to the required height.1,2

Tights aids can be difficult to use and might need a lot of practice to use effectively. If you have reduced grip or reduced shoulder movements, you may find it difficult to pull tights up over your hips.1
