This section list software for communication, sometimes known as Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) software. It includes software that converts onscreen text or symbols to speech, software that play back pre recorded speech and software for the creation of communication boards.
The AAC software listed here may be designed for use with a dedicated AAC device such as those we list under Voice output communication aids or for non-dedicated devices such as PCs and the iPad.
Many AAC systems use a symbol based system instead of text. A variety of symbol systems are in use including: Widgit, PCS, Snaps, Blissymbolics, SymbolStix, Makaton Signs, Sclera, Arasaac and Picture This. CALL Scotland has a guide to Picture and Symbol Sets for Communication with examples of the different symbol sets.
AAC Apps are now available, some are listed in this section. For a comprehensive list of all AAC applications available on the iPhone, iPod and iPad please visit AppsforAAC, CALL Scotland has a Useful Apps for AAC
