Identifying items

Image of Identifying items

The devices in these sections are designed to assist individuals who are blind or have low vision to discriminate between objects, especially objects that may feel similar, for example tinned foods. There are five main times of product:

  • Labels or 'bumps' with a distinctive shape
  • Braille or Moon labels
  • Short message or 'talking' labels that are attached to an item and play a short pre-recorded message to identify the object
  • Colour detectors
  • Portable readers that use labels with a radio frequency or bar code scanning to distinguish an object
