Visual (sight) stimulation

Image of Visual (sight) stimulation

The toys, games, activities and equipment listed here are for children who require visual stimulation.

This includes diffraction mirrors and tubes, lighting, and reflective coloured panels.

Many of these items can be operated by switches, enabling children to have individual control over the visual stimulation they receive.

Help and advice

There are many skills involved in using the eyes for vision. For example, children must be able to:

  • Focus on an object as they reach out to grab it.
  • Converge the eyes on a moving target such as a ball.
  • Understand what they are seeing (visual perceptual skills) in order to do tasks such as reading, writing, drawing and doing puzzles.
  • Find a target amongst many, such as finding mum or dad as they walk in a crowd.
  • Track or scan objects horizontally, vertically and in a circular movement.

If you are concerned about your child's vision, always seek advice from a qualified optometrist.

The items listed here can help with the development of the skills listed above, but advice should always be sought on this from an appropriately qualified health professional, perhaps with guidance from an optometrist.
