These products are useful for cutting and slicing a range of types of food such as fruit, vegetables, cheese and bread. They include:
Using scissors or kitchen shears can be easier for cutting some types of food such as herbs or bacon rind.1 Many are readily available on the high street but if you require a different style of scissors because of reduced grip, tremor or hand injury read our advice on choosing scissors.
Food processors make quick work of slicing and shredding. Ensure though that they are easy to use, assemble and maintain. See the Ricability food preparation machines checklist.
Ricability is an independent consumer research charity providing free, practical and unbiased reports for older and disabled people.
An electric carving knife (readily available on the high street) can be great for slicing meat, cabbage and bread. Check the release mechanism though to ensure the blade can be removed easily for washing.2
Using a coloured chopping board which provides contrast to the food colour may be helpful for people with low vision. For example, a dark coloured vegetable like green beans on a light chopping board can make it easier to see and therefore safer to use.3 4
