Help and advice

These items may be useful for people with incomplete tetraplegia1, some sight loss and people with the use of one hand.

However, its worth thinking about:

  • Keeping the salt and pepper mill in a dry place, away from steam to avoid clogging;
  • The type of salt or product you want to grind: some salt will rot a zinc or carbon steel mechanism. Check with the manufacturer if you are unsure, otherwise choose a ceramic grinding blade instead (although they are usually more expensive). It is still important to check whether you able to grind rock salt though.
  • Ease of filling (some require good hand dexterity) and the capacity of the drum;
  • Ease of access for battery changing. Is it possible to do this with reduced grip or low sight? Or would a mechanical type from the high street be easier to manage?
  • An electric salt and pepper mill may require less strength and hand grip if it has a one touch hand operation.

Reviews on the Internet are a good source of information on the good points and drawbacks of the individual design. It is also worth looking at these dispensers in the shops if possible before purchasing.
