Band bath lifts

Image of Band bath lifts

Band lifts are a type of bath lift which consist of a fabric band and a wall mounted unit. One end of the fabric band slots into a floor mounted bracket beside the bath, the other end of the band passes over the bath and into the wall-fixed unit. When the band is taut a user can sit on it, and press a button which gently releases the band - so lowering the user into their bath. When the up button is pressed, the band retracts into the wall unit. As the band tightens, it will lift the user.

Help and advice

Users must be able to sit and turn on the band whilst lifting their legs over the bath rims if they wish to bathe independently.

The main benefit of band bath lifts is that they lower you right to the bottom of the bath allowing you to immerse your body in the water and recline in the bath.

However, as these lifts only consist of a band, they offer no back or trunk support. They may not be suitable for individuals with poor sitting balance and trunk control as the user has to adjust his/her sitting position several times during the lowering and raising process. The band can be detached from the floor and fully reclined into the wall unit to allow another member of the household to use the bath.

When considering bathing equipment an individual assessment with an occupational therapist may be appropriate, as your safety in your bathroom is very important. We recommend trying a bath lift before purchase either via a home demonstration, an assessment by an Occupational Therapist and/or visiting an Equipment Demonstration Centre like the Disabled Living Foundation or an Assist UK centre.
