Bath lifts fit inside the bath and can lift the bather from near the bottom of the bath up to the height of the bath rim.
The majority of bath lifts have a seat and backrest made of either solid plastic or mesh fabric. Some bath lifts have the option of a reclining mechanism to give a more relaxing bath.
Manual and powered versions are available.
Individuals using a bath lift still need to be able to lift their legs over the bath rims (whilst seated) if they wish to bathe independently.
Bath lifts can be removed to allow another member of the household to use the bath but their weight and rubber suction pads can make them difficult to remove from the bath. However some of the suction feet in newer designs have a lifting mechanism, making it easier. Some models have detachable components making it lighter and safer to remove.
Manual bath lifts are operated hydraulically using the weight of the person to lower the lift and the buoyancy of the water to help to raise the lift. The motor driven versions are usually powered by a rechargeable battery located behind the backrest or in the handset. This must be removed and recharged regularly. Some bath lifts use an air compressor. Users may find the seat unit of these models less stable. Thus, they may be inappropriate for someone with balance difficulties. However these bath lifts are a lot lighter to remove from the bath.
