These cushions provide pressure care either at the back and base of the bath or can be used with another piece of bathing or shower equipment. There are off the shelf items including neck, back supports as well as more customised products which provide more postural support.
A specialist assessment is needed for some of these items.
While some of these products will be used as a luxury item, for other people these cushions inserts and supports are required for pressure relief and essential positioning without which a person would not be able to either tolerate or be able to have a bath.
The bath cushions included here range from low to high pressure relief. Consultation with a health professional before purchasing any pressure reducing equipment is strongly advised as a person may have needs not only for bathing but in other areas, for example in bed. He/she can usually be contacted through the local health authority or referrals can be made by a range of health professionals including doctors, other nurses and therapists. Some of these items are customised to an individual and can be adjusted if changes are required. In some situations the cushioning supports will only be suitable if used in combination with suitable equipment or type of specialist bath base.

We strongly recommend that you also consult professional advice before purchasing any of these specialist postural products. Informed advice is available from community occupational therapists (OT's) who are often based in the Social Services department of your local council.
