Level access shower trays and formers

Image of Level access shower trays and formers

These are a range of shower trays that have an entrance threshold of up to 1 cm depending on the manufacturers specification. This provides an easy walk into the shower or is also easily accessible with a mobile shower chair. Some of the trays are recessed or surface-mounted depending on the type of flooring where the shower is to be fitted.

Shower tray formers are also included, some formers may require flooring to be laid on top.

Help and advice

Walk-in showers or level access showers can be used as a term interchangeably. This means they provide easy access for a mobile person or with the use of a mobile shower chair. However manufacturers and suppliers often include stepped access showers within the description. In this case a person has to be able to negotiate a step.

There are a wide range of sizes of trays available and some types may be cut to size. The size may depend on the room available and the needs of the individual and carers. A person requiring the use of a mobile shower chair is likely to require more space. Read more on shower trays.

When considering bathing equipment an individual assessment with an occupational therapist may be appropriate, your safety in your bathroom is very important. There may be individual factors which determine which bathing equipment best suits your needs, the information on this site is not a substitute for individual assessment.

Once you have determined the essential features required you will probably need advice from a surveyor and/or builder or a specialist from a supplier to determine the feasibility of your bathroom. If it is essential to have a level access shower ensure this is communicated to the builders as sometimes instead of putting a recess in the floor they may surface mount the tray on the floor which results in a step.
