Manual bath lifts are placed inside the bath and can assist the user to gradually descend to near the bottom of the bath and then assist them up to the height of the bath rim. They are comprised of a solid seat on a hydraulic mechanism, and some models have a backrest.
Manual bath lifts are operated hydraulically using the weight of the person to lower the lift and the buoyancy of the water to help raise the lift.
Users must be able to lift their legs over the bath rims whilst seated on the seat if they wish to bathe independently. The models without a back require the user to have adequate sitting balance. Some models have a reclining backrest.
Manual bath lifts can be lifted out of the bath to allow another member of the family to use the bath. They are generally fairly portable for travelling.
Manual bath lifts are cheaper than powered bath lifts but generally require greater sitting balance than powered bath lifts.
When considering bathing equipment an individual assessment with an occupational therapist may be appropriate, as your safety in your bathroom is very important. There may also be individual factors which determine which bathing equipment best suits your needs. The information on this site is not a substitute for individual assessment.
