These products may assist with dental care; shaving; and toiletry, cosmetic and jewellery applications. Some of the products will stabilise other items or enlarge the handles.

The mirrors are for self-examination. For example, adjustable mirrors for catheterising; mirrors with integral hand grips; and unbreakable mirrors for use in situations where standard glass would be unsafe.

Help and advice

It is worth considering what part of the activity you require assistance with. You may be able to modify the method of carrying out a task or use one of the personal care products available.

The long handled products may help people with a limited range of movement in their wrists or hips and could compensate for a lack of reach or strength. For a person with coordination problems such as tremors, ataxia, or athetoid movements, stabilising the arm may help. Building up handles may assist people who have a limited grip.

Assist UK
Assist UK is the National network for advice on independent living equipment. Assist UK leads a UK wide network of Disabled Living Centres. Each centre has a permanent exhibition of products and equipment designed to enable independent living. The centres provide individuals with opportunities to view, and try, products and equipment and obtain information and advice from professional staff about equipment that may assist them.
