Some makes of fall detector can be worn on a cord around the neck, others can be clipped to your belt or worn with a waist pouch accessory. The fall detector will trigger an alarm if it detects an impact whilst you are not in a vertical position, this is what occurs in the majority of falls. Some models will make a buzzing noise to let you know they are about to trigger your alarm so that you can cancel the alarm if necessary. If you do not cancel the alarm the fall sensor automatically alerts your help centre. They will then attempt to talk to you and listen to your description of what has occurred before deciding the most appropriate action to take. For example, they may need to call an ambulance for you.

At night an alternative system for monitoring falls is recommended, such as the bed occupancy sensor.

These fall detectors may not detect certain types of falls such as a slow fall sliding off a chair. Thus it is good practice to have several different sensors, such as chair occupancy sensors and PIR detectors all working together to protect you.
