These chairs are designed to offer support and comfort to people who experience involuntary movements. The front of the seat tends to be higher than the back forming a wedge effect. This means independent transfers may be more difficult with deep seat chairs unless there is a tilt-in-space facility to assist with standing. Generally people requiring this level of supportive seating would require hoisting so standing from them would not be an issue.
When considering a chair an individual assessment with an occupational therapist or physiotherapist may be appropriate. These chairs are usually demonstrated from the specific company and an OT or physiotherapist may be able to attend the visit. Your safety is important and there may be individual and environmental factors which determine which chair best suits your needs in the short and longer term. The information on this site is not a substitute for individual assessment.
You may be eligible for an assessment and equipment from your local authority. If you are eligible the equipment will be provided on a long-term loan basis. Alternatively, you may be eligible for a direct payment from your local authority to purchase something suitable. View more information on equipment provision via your local authority and the direct payments scheme.
Some multi-adjustable chairs may also be suitable.
