Moving and handling

Image of Moving and handling

The moving and handling section of Living made easy for children contains listings of hoists, hoist scales, slings and small handling aids - all designed for children with disabilities.

Before choosing any of this equipment, you need to consider all of the pros and cons. You may also need to consider other possible options - sometimes there are simpler solutions to overcome moving and handling difficulties. Changing your daily routine, rearranging furniture or being trained in a safer transfer technique can all make a difference.1

This is why it is important to have a manual handling assessment (usually with your child's occupational therapist or physiotherapist) so that every moving and handling situation is reviewed, and safe solutions are found. This will also ensure that the type of equipment being recommended will meet your child's current and future functional needs.1-2

Help and advice

Safe moving & handling is important to everyone. Injuries are often the result of repeated strain due to poor habits over many months or years. Don't wait until you have pain to do something about it - get information and training on safe transfers by speaking to an occupational therapist, physiotherapist or a moving and handling advisor.3

The equipment listed here may be provided by your local authority, depending on their eligibility criteria. If your child is eligible, the equipment will be provided on a long-term loan basis. Alternatively, you may be eligible for a direct payment from your local authority to purchase something suitable.
