A stairlift is a motorized seat that runs up and down a staircase on a track / rail. They come in three main variants:

  1. The most common seated stairlifts
  2. Perching / standing stairlift
  3. Models with a wheelchair platform

Stairlifts are available for both curved and straight staircases, straight stairlifts are cheaper than curved ones.

Stair lifts are also known as 'stair elevators', 'inclinators' 'stair chairs', 'staircase lifts' and 'stairway lifts'.

Help and advice

We strongly recommend that you consult professional advice before puchasing a stairlift. Informed advice is available from community occupational therapists (OT's) who are often based in the Social Services department of your local council.

All stairlifts must be CE marked, and comply with British standard BS 5776. Several safety features are included on all stairlifts including safety cut outs on the lifts edges to prevent entrapment or injury to the user or other household members.

Stairlifts can usually be installed in a day and, if no longer needed, can be removed leaving little trace.
