Intercoms enable communication between two or more rooms, or between one or more rooms and a box outside your front door. Thus they can be used to talk to a caller at your door before you decide whether to let them in.
Wired intercoms are cheaper but require a wire to be run between the intercoms, e.g between the box outside the front door and the box where you talk to the caller (which is often installed in a hall or living room). Wireless intercoms are a lot easier to install as this wire isn't required.
Check the range of an intercom system will be sufficient to cover the distance between the two locations where you wish to install your intercom.
Intercoms may run of an internal battery or an optional power supply.
