These systems can control a range of household appliances and devices using infra red and/or radio transmissions. Extra switches can be attached, and many have a 'scanning' capability, which makes operation easier if you have limited dexterity.
These environmental control systems can be operated with one or two large switches, although these may not be included. These models often have a 'scanning function' - pressing the switch once can cause each button or touch screen image to be back lit or highlighted in turn. Some have auditory feedback / voice announcement of the function as it is selected. When the button / image you wish to select is highlighted, or announced, you press the switch again to select it. A range of swiches are available.
Environmental control systems control peripheral devices through either Infra Red or Radio Frequencies. Radio Frequencies can control devices in other rooms of your home that are out of sight. Infra red has to be pointed at a device which is in sight. Infra Red is used to control appliances such as televisions and DVD players. Many environmental controls in this section can use infra red or radio frequencies but some are limited to one or the other.
