Commodes

Image of Commodes

Commodes are available in a range of styles including:

  • metal framed
  • wooden framed
  • cane construction
  • armchair styled

If the commode is to be used in a living room then you may prefer an armchair style commode as the colour and appearance are more likely to blend in.

Folding commodes are available, and may be useful if you wish to store the commode for periods when its not in use, or transport it on holidays.

Help and advice

Commodes are used with a plastic commode pan that must be emptied at regular intervals. The commode pan is removed either by lifting it out from the top or by sliding it out from underneath. We recommend using the pan lid when carrying the pan to reduce the risk of spillage.

If there is nobody to carry out the emptying task, then a chemical commode may provide a solution because it needs emptying less frequently. The commode pan is deeper and contains liquid disinfectant to help neutralise odours and kill bacteria. However, the larger capacity will mean that the pan is heavier and more difficult to manage. An emptying service may be provided by your local social services.

If you experience difficulty standing from chairs, toilets etc then it is important that the commode you use has armrests and has a suitable seat height for you. Commodes are available which are height adjustable. Ideally, users should sit with their feet flat on the floor so that they are stable and with their thighs horizontal (with your knees and hips at the same height). If your knees are higher than your hips when you are sat on your commode then it may be too low for you. Armrests may also help as you can push up from these when standing.
