Case study - how equipment helped Jacob

Until Jacob's parents installed some epilepsy sensors and an alert they had been sleeping in the same room as Jacob and getting little sleep.

Their challenge:

Jacob is 6 years old and loves sport and computer games. He has epilepsy and can experience a seizure at any time day or night. He lives with his parents Mr and Mrs Edwards. Jacob has always slept in his parents bedroom so that they can attend to him if he has a seizure during the night. Mrs Edwards frequently sleeps in Jacob's bed as she is anxious that he may have a seizure without her hearing. Both Jacob and his parents are keen that he should now have his own bedroom. However, Mr and Mrs Edwards need to know if Jacob experiences a seizure during the night.

Possible solutions:

1) A telecare solution was installed including a telecare control box and personal alarm button so Mrs Edwards can call the monitoring centre for help and support at any time. 2) An epilepsy sensor has been placed on Jacob's bed. This will detect if he experiences a seizure whilst in his bed.
3) A vibrating pager and a vibrating disc are kept by Mr and Mrs Edwards' bed. Mrs Edwards keeps the vibrating disc under her pillow; if Jacob has a seizure Mrs Edwards is immediately woken via the pager and disc.

The outcome:

Mrs Edwards said: "This has given us peace of mind and reduced the anxiety and sleepless nights. We are now able to sleep in our own bed again, knowing we will be alerted when our son has an epileptic seizure during the night. It has also given me more time to spend with my other child during the day."
